What is the best laptop to buy for a Petroleum tech
Re: What is the best laptop to buy for a Petroleum tech
We use the Lenovo T4XX series machines. They are "altered" before we get them though. RAM is maxed out and SSD is installed. Running Windows 7 64 bit with PCMCIA cards for serial connections.

I use Lenovo Y50 Touch, Dedicated 2GB graphics card powered by NVIDIA GeForce 860M and a hybrid SSD drive. A backlit keyboard with a stylish red/black combo design. Touchscreen. 1TB of storage. 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. Impressive 15.6” display. Excellent battery life.

Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 MK5
Windows 7
That's what I use. The good thing is if you do some shopping you can pick one up for about $300-$400 with a new SSD. It has a 10inch screen which can be too small for some, but it is helpful when you don't have counter space. It does NOT have an optical drive. Not a big deal since sapphires are going away and you can always use an external. After owning a few Toughbooks, I would never consider anything else for work use.
Backup laptop CF-74
Windows XP
Another great cheaper option has a bigger screen and optical drive.
I would stay away from XP. Everything will work fine on Windows 7.

I think one of my friends has one, I'll ask him for some feedback.
Apart from that, I use a Toughbook CF-19 MK5 as well for work, never had any non-user issue with it, it's small but that's what I was looking for anyways.
