Re: Lightning and gas stations

Thanks for posting Milan. Wow.
STI had an article about the Ohio and other related incidents in their Tank Talk issue today. Very interesting.

Re: NFPA 30, 30A

NFPA allows you to view these regulations on-line for free - all you have to do is set-up a free user name and password. Example see "Free Access" link on this page: http://www.nfpa.org/codes-and-standards/document-information-pages?mode=code&code=30 But NFPA downloaded PDF's are protected and can't...

Re: Lightning Strike UST in Ohio

Keep this post going, I'm very curious as well. Switch loading tankers is definitely a no-no with ULSD due to the static issues (as well as the acetobacter microbe contamination from the ethanol component required in most the unleaded fuel supply). So wonder if the tank change had any effect on this...

Re: Lightning Strike UST in Ohio

All the news reports say it was a diesel tank and they definitely had diesel on the island - you can see it in the news reports. In addition, the fire marshal interviewed said it was diesel and said he was nervous about 30,000 gallons of diesel and gasoline combined in the fire. He's not a news pers...

Re: Lightning Strike UST in Ohio

I'll admit I'm a desk jockey most of the time, however I don't hear much in the news about lightning strikes causing craters like this very often. And I'm thinking it would be a noteworthy occurrence?! Really that often? I don't think lightning is uncommon at all. Heck, one of my brothers has been s...

Re: Lightning Strike UST in Ohio

This sentence makes me suspect what happened. "they say lightning hit the fill dome". ULSD has been known to have static discharge issues in confined spaces, lightning hit the spill fill and boom ignited this mix. It happened before in 2011 see here: http://www.steeltank.com/Portals/0/TTNewsletter/D...
