Penny Jumping

Post by pthacker » Fri Aug 30, 2019 10:08 am

Does anyone have a recommendation on how to correct "Penny Jumping" at a marina? We're working with a customer who is experiencing this problem and the state has told them they need it corrected ASAP. We've sent them pressure activated nozzles, but are told that they're still having the same issue.

This is happening on Tokheim 1250 pumps. I haven't seen the location, but it is my understanding that the hose is on reels. Uncertain of the length of the hose.

The issue is happening on both gas and diesel pumps.

Soft hose can cause this issue. replace hose with new smaller diameter hose and also shorter hose can stop this issue. High pressure pump can push the fuel into the a soft hose and it will "expend" a little bit and the total can increase by a penny. Good luck.

How long is the hose?

It's at a marina, and they have varying lengths of hose on reels. I have suggested buying a hardwall/flexsteel hose for the shortest hose and see if that will help with the situation.

Talk to your weights and measures people. It is covered in Handbook 44. Hard wall is a must. They do allow some leeway for marinas and aircraft refueling.

W&M is how the issue came up. I initially recommended prepay nozzles, but the problem persisted. I then suggested the hard wall hose. I’m waiting to hear back from them.
